Human behavior researcher
Katy walks out her appointment smiling as she now has a date. She found a match online and thought about meeting the stranger all day. She entered the small coffee shop and sat in front of the beautiful stranger. “Hi Austin, I’m Katy ” she presents herself with a smile and gives her hand out for him to shake. “Hello I’m glad you accepted my invitation ” she internally rejoiced.
They talked and she was so lost in him that she didn’t notice that he didn’t order them anything to eat. He simply ordered her a ride back home. They agreed to meet in the next three days. Kathy dreamed of him and called her best friend to tell her. “Katy don’t you think somethings are not right… ” she cuts her friend. “Janella I’m happy okay he’s nice and wants to see me again ” Katy says to her friend before receiving a text from him. She hangs up before reading his text on the app they met on.
*Him
What made you fall in love with me?
*Her
your smile
your eyes
your lips
He said nothing leaving her on a deep thoughtful day. Did he see the message? Did he feel rushed? Did he want to know the answer? She turned on her phone ringtone in case he replied to her, something she never did . She went on her day until he replied very late. “Sorry I just saw your text. I’m glad we had such a match can’t wait to see you again. ” She screamed of joy as she kept listening to his recording over and over.
Austin allowed Kathy in his house where he had set the mood with dim lights and the soft scents of vanilla. She smiled as he couldn’t keep his eyes off her. He didn’t speak a second until Kathy pointed at the two cups of fruits and whipped cream. He cleared his throat before handing her her own cup. “How was your three days? ” Kathy smiled shyly. “I missed you. I enjoyed our time together last time. ” He smiled in a charming manner.
They talked about all sorts of things until he made the special request for them to go on a date at a retreat. She agreed without thinking twice. He of course ordered her a ride back home and she took it. She called her friend to let her know. They stopped talking as she chose to follow her passion.
Kathy prepared her bags during the month. She arrives at the retreat with all her bags and Austin makes sure she is escorted to their room. The sun had just set and she was exhausted. She looked around their shared presidential suite. She walked around the place with a pleased smile until she saw him waiting for her in their bath. She got undressed and slipped in to soak opposite of him. They cheered before relaxing completely. Kathy opened up easily to Austin while he did nothing but listened to her.
The next day she woke up without him and stretched out to enjoy a morning full of fuzzy feelings because of her talk last night. She passed out right after drinking the bottle of white wine. She woke up and got dressed in time for their breakfast to be served. He came back from where he had disappeared to eat with her. They then had a very enjoyable massage in their private massage room which included a haircut and facial treatments as well. Then they enjoyed their late night bath again. Kathy spoke for hours until she was tired enough by the wine she had drank.
They chose to go on a walk by the river for their last day at the retreat location. Kathy takes pictures of him without him noticing, disguising it by pictures of nature.
Kathy got dolled up to meet Austin when she saw his face on her television. “How did you get the inspiration for your new study doctor Austin ” he laughs. “Well like I said those were based on true events. A woman does love blindly ” She screams seeing him smirking about his assessment about their relationship. She quickly went to her local bookstore to get his book, forgetting about their date. He’s ruthless leaving not even a single aspect out. He exposed her and categorized her as a very gullible woman. She read his book in one sitting.
He texted her that he was waiting for her but she sent him a picture of his book before erasing the app. He never gave her his private number. Nothing made sense anymore. The fact that their date always ended by him getting her a taxi back home when he had a car. She always had to find her way to him. He spaced out their dates strategically. He never spoke but always listened, making her realize she had not learned anything about him because she was alright with the fact that he looked good. He was playing her for his job and she had to find out through a television report. She texted her friend that she needed her and would wait for her call back. Kathy also sent her the interview for her to know all about her sad story.
After a month of contemplating all the reasons why she shouldn’t go to see a therapist she sets an appointment to go see the therapist her best friend had suggested. Kathy shivers entering the office. She hadn’t spoken to anyone since they broke up. Austin walks in and drops his files. She rushes out and he runs after her. She had entered the wrong office but they both didn’t care as they were running hurriedly. She found herself in a store of flowers and he rushed in behind her. He found her hiding behind tulips.
“Listen just listen to me. I’m extremely sorry I couldn’t tell you. It all went so fast. I’m sorry but this is why the book doesn’t reveal your identity ” She slaps him. “You made me love you for what? ” His face shows his deep sadness. “I didn’t expect for you to be so perfect ” She broke down in tears leaving him. He followed her out and she tried to walk off but he pulled her to his car. She angrily poured out her heart to him and he listened to her before bringing her to his house. She hesitated seeing it was not the same place that they had their second date at. He sat her on his couch before grabbing her his book. “I was told to do this research. My superiors made my account, they did the profiling, they sent out the text messages, they sent me the money for that retreat, they made me do it. I had nothing else but my job as a researcher at that time, I swear I left after that interview and I’ve been trying to find you because they took all your information and erased them after I lied and said the report wasn’t about you.”
Austin grabs the ring he bought for her. “I got it for you and meant to ask you when you broke up with me ” Kathy laughs as he slid the ring around her finger. “I would have said no, ” she whispered as he kissed her.

Innovation
He had great strength and a figure that overpowered people. He lived a careful life, liking the slow paced lifestyle. Because of his posture the only job that took him was the garbage company in his town. They took care of disposing of all sorts of wastes. His boss knew that his workers had various reasons to be in the organisation but he also knew that he had one very great worker. On the other hand there was this lady with a very fragile body with a carefree attitude that ran one of the most influential business in the town. She was in charge of organizing the town and any projects that could occur. Both of those personalities would join forces as they would innovate the waste situation of a growing community. He was sent out by his boss after a great debate with him to her office. It was a wild roller coaster of emotion for him as he didn’t like to step out of his comfort.
He sat on the chair in the office waiting for the woman in charge. She walked in and looked surprised to see him sitting there. She walked around to look at his face and stood astonished. “You’re a garbage man.” He looked back at her trying to piece together a logical answer but nothing came to mind. “What did you expect?” He asked as friendly as possible. “I expected a weird and dirty looking man.” She answered truthfully. “No. We are expected to have great hygiene,” He answered her. From this moment her pre scheduled questions changed drastically. He was well aware of his job but she was astonished to find that no one outside of their organisation knew how they worked. They had to qualify for their position. They had to be in the right health conditions and had to be great team players. They needed to be on time everyday and understand the safety guidelines. The uniforms had to be cleaned and remain bright for everyone to have the same brightness. They needed to shower before and after work to make sure that their skin remained fresh and clean because their job was what they needed to represent. They worked neatly and needed to take the time to greet the neighbors, help the green spaces remain clean and have an eye out for lost animals.
“Well thanks a lot for all those useful insights.” She spoke. “I should hire you to keep my house clean” She spoke freely with a laugh. “No problem” He answered her. They shook hands and she gave him her card after writing her address at the back. “Tomorrow” She requested. “What time?” He asked her. “Well I don’t think I’ll be leaving anytime tomorrow. I have meetings all around different time zones so whenever after your normal hours. Just give me a call when it’s done.” He agreed, finding it weird that someone wouldn’t take the time to go home and rest.
He’d work his spare time away in the huge mansion she owned but didn’t care to live in. It hid all sorts of dirt and waste. He fell in love with the pictures that she stored. He made up stories of how different their childhood was but how interesting each of their lifestyles were. She didn’t notice the changes as she was barely there to see any of them. She simply paid him a fixed fee for his labor. On her side she applied herself on this innovative project having planned a huge vacation to celebrate her win. Except the business that took profits from the waste people made, fought against her ideas and made her look bad.
In the end she pushed her project and it worked out as the disposable team teamed up with her company to offer a better and easier service to the people. She finally decided to come home after a long hour of work and saw one thing out of place. Her broken frame holding her dear family picture had been replaced for a better and sturdier similar frame. She smiled seeing it on the wall where she’d planned to place it. She made sure to invite the entire waste disposal organisation to join in on the celebration. She thanked the organisation and everyone that encouraged her and the people that didn’t.
He was cleaning after the party was over and she walked up to him. “Thank you for fixing the frame” He smiled at her. “No problem. I thought maybe that’s why you couldn’t stay home so much.” He answered her. “That’s very thoughtful of you.” She answered. “Hey listen I have this trip that I was supposed to go with my friend but she couldn’t come and told me last minute would you be able to come with me?” She asked him. “I’d have to ask my boss” He said not really interested in leaving his little home. “There he is” She said, waving at his boss. He was uncomfortable but still showed respect and asked, to his surprise he agreed seeing as he’d never ever before taken days off. She smiled and looked at him. “Mare sure to bring your bathing shorts. Tomorrow at my place we’ll leave at 4.”
They arrived the very sunny place and got on the boat that she reserved. He turned his eyes seeing her get undressed to reveal her bathing suit. “Come on I didn’t bring you to be so boring” She told him before pushing him into the pool. They played like children until she got a foot cramp. Her ankle swollen, she placed it on his leg to be elevated while she drank champagne and he looked at the view. “So are you always this carefree?” He asked her. “Yes you should try it” He laughed. “Not the way I like to be.” He answered her truthfully. He looked at her ankle and saw that he could massage it to help with blood flow. She allowed him to, feeling very surprised at his gentle hands seeing his usual strength being put to use for his work. “Dinner is ready.” The chef came with a table and a full course meal. She moved around sitting closer to him. Her leg was placed on another chair to keep it up. “To our great collaboration” he said raising his glass to her. “Yes I’ll drink to that.”
He was unpacking, feeling relaxed and lighter than before, when his phone rang. “Yes.” He answered. “I need another reason to see you.” She spoke. “Why?” He asked, surprised. “I loved your company.” She admitted. He smiled. “I loved your company too. Will you ….” A knock made him stop and he answered the door. “Yes I want to go out with you. You’re fun and gentle and a gentleman. Nothing like you look like when someone first meets you.” He hugged her for her gentle words. “I’m glad I worked with you.” He told her.

The General
I gently wrap the last child of the general before cleaning my hands. One of them wakes up and I attend to him. The general enters the room and gets his servants to grab the babies. They walked out without a word and he eyed me down. He whispers something in his best worker’s ear and he nods looking right in my eyes. I step back when he gets off the chair. He leaves the room and I’m left alone. I try to escape the room but the doors are all locked. I sit on the sofa and contemplate the past few weeks I’ve had of work. I’m going to die whenever my work is done then they’ll dispose of me.
Flashback<<< begin >>>
I was waiting for my turn to buy a few fruits when a group of men heavily armed barged in. I dropped my basket and ran in a corner to hide. I shut my eyes when they look in my direction. “Open your eyes” I force myself to open my eyes and look right into the most feared single man in the small town. “Take her” I scream as I am dragged in the back of the car. I hug myself and keep my head low during the entirety of the ride. I fall in the mud when I am pushed out of the car. I drag myself out of the mud and follow the man looking at me sternly. I am surrounded by men and they guide me to a small house. I watch the door get closed before me, there are no windows, just a small candle illuminating the room. I figured that I could clean up seeing the bath and white clothes. I braid my hair after taking a shower and put on clean clothes. The door is opened the next day and I am asked to watch after the general’s babies. I make sure to be careful with the babies because the second in command is assigned to watch me.
Flashback>>>end<<<
I wake up from my rest seeing as I was locked in here for days. The second in command walks in looking beaten up. He throws me a few bandages and I grab a bottle of alcohol.
He tense at the burning reaction caused by his fresh wounds and the alcohol. I quickly wrap his shoulder. He stands up and looks at me. I watch him take in my every feature from up close and I do the same. I look into his eyes to realize they’re a dark green which is very rare here. His phone rings and we break our eye contact. He waits a few more seconds before answering the phone, leaving me alone in the room. I sit back on the couch. I clean my hands from his blood, maybe that will be my chance to escape. I stayed for the babies because I got so attached to them but now they’re gone.
Escaping was an easy task. There was an attack on the house and everyone was shaken up. I escaped by running through the forest. After days of running, I made it to a nearby town whose people were being moved out. I received a new identity to be sent to a new country. I arrive in Iceland and I am given a house along with a guide to have smooth immigration. I entered the first hair salon I found and let them change my hair style. From that moment I took on a new attitude.
“Katrin you’re the best” I laugh and send her a kiss. I choose to start cleaning even if my next appointment is not near. I tell my coworkers that I’ll be quick and leave to grab something to eat. “Katrin!!” A group of kids yell to grab my attention. I laugh and give them a salutation to make them laugh. My best friend scares them away by making his motor roar. I raise my eyebrows at him. I shake my head at him before getting on his motorcycle. I wave to my nice friends, I love teaching them English when I can. I hop off the bike to order us two sandwiches and a fry to share.
He smiled looking at me while leaning against his bike. I sit down at a table and he follows me. We eat our sandwiches laughing at the kids’ reactions. I check my watch to see it’s time for me to leave. I show him my watch and eat his last fry. He chuckles and throws out our wrappers before driving me back to work. His watch rings and I send him a kiss seeing as he needs to answer his phone.
I finished work an hour ago and the street lights have turned on. He’s usually never late. I decide to start walking seeing as I start attracting men’s attention. I arrived at his house to find the lights on. I enter through the back to find him fighting with the man I thought died in the attack. I freeze on sight seeing him recognize me. I rushed out knowing he’d take me away again. I hide in my house basement. What is he doing here? How does he know Helgi? Why were they fighting? I stay hidden for a few days until I feel safe enough to step out. I raise my hands realizing my mistake seeing heavily armed men dressed in black pointing their weapons towards me. I am handcuffed and brought in a police car. On our way to wherever, the car is involved in a car crash. My body is pulled out by a man whose face is covered and I am placed on a motorcycle to get driven away.
“Katrin it’s Helgin. The man you used to work for is after anyone who worked for him because the interpol is on his case.” He stops his motorcycle and pushes me off towards a boat. I look up from the ground to see him get shot at. I scream and get dragged into the boat. I cry seeing him spill out of all his blood. I scream again when we are shot at. The person in control of the boat turns around to shoot at the shooter, not missing the targets. He receives a bullet but he still gets us to the destination. He pushes me off the boat once we arrrive before leaving. I watch him fall off his boat as the boat continues to move in the other direction. I enter the car waiting for me. I find the general’s second in command looking at me through the mirror before I am put to sleep.
I wake up and recognize the smell of the place I had left. We’re back exactly where I escaped from. I stepped out of the car to find that nothing had changed. The general steps out from a car behind us and he walks towards me. He slaps me harshly. “You work for us. Don’t think that you could hide anywhere from me. Now I wanted to kill you but I found that you were protected from an anonymous someone and I’m keeping you alive until I find him. Until I find who’s selling me.” He directs us to get back in the car. I hold my cheek as it still stings. The second in command offers me his drink full of ice. I take it and place it against my burning cheek. We arrived in time because the ice all melted and my cheek was frozen. I step out and he follows me in the house. I am directed towards a bedroom that I am locked inside. I found clean clothes in the bathroom. I take a bath before sliding on the clean clothes. I was drying my hair when I was ordered to step out. I follow the man through the house and into the general’s office, to find him beating down on his second in command.
“Gaetano! Fight back, it’s the time to express your anger!” The general screams before continuously beating down on him.
When the beating stops the general leaves with his guards and I am dragged away back to the room. A few hours later, the door is opened and Gaetano silently walks in with a medical kit. He sits on the bed and I attend to his bruised body. and fresh wounds. I caress his bruised cheek and he grabs my hand to kiss it gently. I shiver as he slides a small gun in my hand. He connects our forehead with both eyes tightly shut. I wrap my hand around the gun he handed to me. I hide it at my waist and he nods at me. He leaves me alone and I take in the heavy load that he’s dropped on my shoulder. I couldn’t possibly use this gun against anyone.
Ever since Gaetano visited me. I wonder why he’s given me the gun. I wish I could ask him but it’s just too risky. We do nothing all day which gets boring. I get to sit at everyone’s view while the general and him wander around to find the mole. I was counting how many guards stood around all day when the general came back with a bleeding Gaetano. “Fix him we had a tail.” I was thrown a medical kit and quickly moved to my room. The door is shut for security as everyone gets ready for any visit. His bottom lips tremble as I try to clean him and he shakes violently when I touch the wound. I quickly cleaned his wound before applying a bandage. He grabs my head and gives me a passionate kiss which I enjoy. He slides his hand in my pocket before leaving me alone.
I slide my hand in my pocket to find pages from a novel with highlighted words.
After a few hours I decoded his message.
- The general’s real name is Kadeus Hero
- He’s killed about 600 innocent people
- His babies are in hiding at Sao Paulo
- He’s been planning to kill us
- His plan is to burn us alive in this house
- He wants to create for himself a new identity
- You cannot die.
I cry at the immensity of this nightmare. He’s willing to die just for the truth to come out. I choose to plan my escape knowing he’ll act blind just to have me free. I flush the pieces of paper just in time for the general to come in. “I think I should make you my wife since you’re the only woman here and I need to have a long line of descendants.” I look away from him as he caresses my face. “Sir your appointment is here” a guard says.
I walk back in my room where the guard starts undressing himself. I take a deep breath and turn to the man to kill him. He falls against the door and I escape through the window. A hand grabs me and pulls me away into the forest. We get to a boat. Gaetano sets it on autodrive for me, I try to stop him from leaving. “Sorry” he tells me, knocking me out.
I am woken up by fishermen. I start crying knowing he gave his life for me to escape. I grab an envelope laying beside me. It contains money, a map with a location circled and a name. I show the men the map and offer them money to get me to the place, they refuse the money but get me to the location.
A lady dressed in black stands at the gate of a school looking at me sternly. “Manoela” the lady nodded her head yes and the gates behind her opened. I follow her inside. I am given a plate of food and start devouring the food. “We need information now on the man that held you captive” the lady asks me, I stop eating to look at her. “I want papers and protection.” I demand. A man comes in with a weapon and I pull my own gun at him. “You want information then you’ll have to give me what I want” I repeat. “He told us she was different.” My heart hurts getting the hint that they’re speaking of Gaetano. The man puts his weapon down and I take a seat to finish my plate. “Papers first.” I demand. The man picks his phone up and leaves the room, the lady hands me a tissue to wipe my hands. I grab my weapon before following her. She points out the general’s babies showing me how grown they’ve gotten. “They will be placed in a secured school but I just thought you’d want to see them.”
I am violently woken up and dragged in a car with the kids. The driver does his best to drive through unpaved routes as we’re escorted by air. We arrive to an helicopter and we quickly climb it to be taken elsewhere. I watch the kids play with their toys looking funny with their ears covered. We finally arrive at the destination and I watch them get taken away. I myself am taken to an office to make my deposition.
Months-later
For the first time I feel free and enjoy the sun.
I thank the man for helping me step out the boat and pay him. Then I choose to eat at a little restaurant. The smell of seafood fill my nose and I almost want to eat it all. I enjoyed every bite of it but a weird thing happened. The waiter told me my meal had been paid for. I thanked the waiter and quickly stepped out to get back to the house.
I arrive at the door to find him sitting there. “Gaetano” I say out of breath. He grabs my hand to kiss it. I cry of happiness as he hugs me. We sit in the house not talking. “Sorry for bringing you in all this.” I frown. “I’m not supposed to be here or speak to you but you’ve gotten under my skin since my eyes laid on you.” I blush at his words. “You could say I feel the same way” He smiled before pulling my face to his for us to share more than a passionate kiss.
I wake up on his chest at his phone ringing. He grabs it before me and reads the contact’s name before putting the phone down. His eyes shine as he looks into my eyes. “Morning” I laugh. “Morning” I whisper, laying my head back down and caressing his chest. “Katrina I can’t stay longer with you” I frown. “Why is that?” I ask him, laying my hand on his heart. He sighs. “I don’t know how you’ll take this but I’m with the interpol, I infiltrated the general’s group to get him. I wasn’t supposed to save anyone from him.” I move away from him crying. His phone went off again and shook my head at him. “Katrina” He screamed behind the door. “Leave!” I screamed heart-broken. I waited to hear what he would say next but I heard the front door shut loudly. I cried to myself until I realized it was no use. We don’t choose who we fall for.
I watch the general make the news around the world as he’s arrested into the biggest prison. A few weeks later he’s found dead. I step out of the maternity doctor office with my good health scan and meet him. I look away from him seeing the surprise on his face to see my pregnant belly. I grabbed my bicycle and sped away from him back to my house. He followed me there and I said nothing as I pushed him away. “You shouldn’t be angry” I gave him a threatening glare. “Don’t tell me what I shouldn’t be doing. You are never here and you’ll probably leave the second your phone rings so leave me alone.” He took a deep breath. “Please Katrina just marry me” I shake my head no. He looked hurt at my response. He sat quietly on the couch as I cooked for two. I lose all my anger seeing him stare at my belly curiously. “It’s a boy. He’s healthy. He already smiles a lot.” “Have you thought of a name for him?” I lose my smile. “No I wanted to call him after you but I’m not sure what your real name is” I admit turning around to shut the oven top. He comes close to slide his hands on my belly. “I’m sorry. I didn’t want you to learn my real job through someone else. It’s dangerous what I do and caring for you is even more dangerous.” “Then why didn’t you stop yourself” I ask him as he breathes on my neck. “Because I can’t, you’re under my skin” He says before laying a kiss on the crook of my neck. I turn around to hold his face. “no funny business” he laughs at me. “Then marry me” I shake my head, taking his arms off from around me. “I can’t, I don’t know you.” Little did I know that I knew more than I thought. He presented to me his mother who lived a few houses down from me and who had been watching me. She also adopted all the babies that her son had chosen to rescue. He presented me to the owners of the restaurants I loved so much, unknowingly they were his first employers. I gave him my hand after 6 weeks and three weeks later our son Hamelin. We named him the same name as his grandfather.
I wave him goodbye as he goes on to work overseas. His mother holds my shoulder to help me stay composed but how could I. I love him.
Hamelin cried all night and nothing could stop him other than his father. “Hey buddy, I’m here.” I cover my mouth seeing him stand there. “I missed you two too much.” I joined in their hug to hold him close. After putting our son to bed it’s my turn to be carried to our bed for us to enjoy a loving kiss. I wake up to our son’s soft cries of hunger. He lets me go to feed our son. He welcomes me back to bed with kisses and a smile. “Thank you for becoming mine” I smile. “I loved you when I didn’t know the real you and I love even more the man you are. Plus Hamelin wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our union.”

Different plans
I sit on the chair and face the family’s elders. They discuss their demands and I agree to all of them. My father has already arranged for us the required necessities. The men all share a good laugh and I remain calm although I’ve not yet seen my bride. I share a meal out of respect even if my stomach isn’t settled to eat.
Later
I step out of the car and open for the young lady I’ve agreed to take home. She stands before me. I discovered a very pale looking lady. Much different than her brothers. Her hair is tied and darker than her brothers again. I don’t know what I was expecting but I’m not displeased. She’s short so she easily slide in her seat. I shut the door and get in the car to drive. She looks around frantically but doesn’t say anything. I watch her breathe heavily as she sleeps. I drive for hours thinking of what to do once we get home. I haven’t had anyone over since my mother’s death. I was her caregiver since she’d fallen sick. I’ve grieved her before accepting my father’s pressing demands to marry before he passed as well. The sun begins setting once I reach my home. I watch her sleep in the back, wondering who designed that dress. It was unconventional but yet beautiful on her. I waited until she woke up. I quickly opened her door and she slipped out like she had gotten in. I walked behind her and helped her up the stairs. She nodded at me before we entered.
Silence
The house felt really cold with her in it. She remains in the bedroom I’ve prepared for her and doesn’t say a word. I offer her food and she waits for me to offer it to her only eating in there. I already miss my mother. I want to call it quites as it’s so silent. I’ve never been so quiet before. I need noise. She showers quietly at night if I weren’t attentive I’d say she’s doing it on purpose. She doesn’t hum or make any sound. I sit in the silence for hours , unaware of what to say or do. I want to speak to her but how do I go up and say something when I fear she won’t respond. I build the courage to call her father and ask if she’s mute. He simply responds that she’s not been out her bedroom for a decade, her only friend being books. So I thanked him and gathered the courage to speak to her. I opened the doors to find her looking exactly like the first day, she wasn’t sent with clothes. I grab her hand and brought her to my library. Her eyes widened and she looked at me. “Read as much as you want here” She quietly walked towards a set of books I had forgotten about. I grabbed it out of her hand and she frowned confused. I gave it back to her gently. “I wrote these never published.” She found a seat at my desk chair and began to read. Silently I watched her read my words.
Dirty
She lives in the library reading every book possible. Except today her skin is reacting to wearing this dress too long. I bring her my clothes to choose to change out of her dress. She touches the fabrics gently before pulling gently the softest pyjamas I have out of my hands. I let her have it and watch her walk to her bedroom to clean up. She takes her time and I wonder what’s taking her so long. I decided to clean the library without touching the books she laid out to read. I find a board of chess and smile remembering how much I used to play with my parents. They taught me the hard way. They would use their two brains against mine. I had to practice and remember all their moves before I could win a few rounds with them. I decide to set it up and place it under a light. She’s still not back so I choose to move a piece before going to my bedroom to answer a call.
Travel
I arrive the cleaner’s shop and hand him my wife’s dress. I thought it would be a great reason to allow her some alone time. I’ve been really after her and I think if there’s any chance for her to open up it’s by allowing her space. The cleaner takes it and gives me his card with the exact date the dress will be available for pick up. I thank him before driving back home. She doesn’t say anything or moves from her seat. Except I do notice the opposite chess piece has been moved. Seeing her submerged in my book. I simply move another piece to continue the game. She doesn’t make a movement nor a sound but I guess she’ll answer it later.
Checkmate
We play for weeks. Our first game ends when we end up both losing as the game is tied. Then I set it up again for us to end up in the same place. Finally she ends up sitting for a few moments and play with me. I watch her play intensely. She’s surprising me with every move. We play two rounds before I begin to take the game seriously. She’s not one player to call it quite even if the king is under many missiles.
I play with her until finally my eyes light up and I win. “Checkmate” I tell her. Her eyes widen as I take her king down. She looks at me for a moment before nodding at me. “You’re good. I’ve never lost a game before” I smile feeling at ease. “I’ve been practicing for a while seeing how you play. I had to be serious.” She smiled. “What’s your name?” She asked. “Anton,” I asked, confused. “I’m Ella although I’m pretty sure my father told you that when he married me. I’m his only daughter.” She explains. “Will you show me your bedroom? I want to see where you sleep. Sometime it gets cold in the bedroom.” She admits shyly. I walk her to my bedroom. She looks at the room with wide eyes. “This is immense. I thought my bedroom was big but this is intense.” She says. I push her gently inside. “You can visit.” She slowly walks in and spots my library. “These are my favorite books.” She grabs one out. “You liked a book with a female heroine?” She questions me. “My mother wrote it. She simply didn’t put her real name. She was for me a heroine at home.” I explain.
Activities
Seeing as she was not fully comfortable. I decided to take her out and see the land. She agreed and I planned some extra activities for us. She prepared herself before coming out of her room. I brought her to the beginning of the trail and she laughed at the surprise. “You surprise me Anton” She says before I watch her get on her horse. I hop on mine before walking by her side on the trail. “I used to play outside with my brothers. We would go back horse riding, we played hide and seek, we had apple fights. My father owns an apple field and we threw the rotten ones at each other. I loved to be outside. I love fresh air and freedom.” So we talked our entire ride down the path. We share sweet memories that sometimes turn bitter seeing as we’d both lost someone along the way. She had been raised by her grandmother because her mother wasn’t able to. Once she reached eighteen her father locked her up to make sure no man asked for her hand. Her grandmother did everything for her until she passed right after her mother. She was left to her books. Her mother loved to read and play chess. Which her brothers loved but weren’t really gifted at like her. We reached the small cabin right as the sun completely set. We placed the horses at their station where they could eat, drink and sleep. She made sure they were covered before entering with me.
Plans
I woke up still holding onto her body. She lays peacefully on the bed and I can’t think of anything else but her perfection. I move her hair to lay my head on top on hers. She gently wakes up and looks at me with a smile. We stare at each other silently. “Are you not going to kiss me?” She spoke very quietly. I smiled and took her lips to mine.
Later
She sat at the table drawing as I got dressed. “I thought that maybe it would be nice if we did something with the beautiful land.” She proposed. I walked to her. “What are you thinking?” She slipped me the papers. “It’s not perfect but I thought about investing in making this place more fruitful so we could come here and enjoy it more.” I didn’t think twice and accepted. I sent the pictures and ideas to my contacts. “Absolutely, this place is very special” I said before kissing her. She kissed me back. I caressed her face gently.
Few years later
Ella left me for her personal reasons. We share the kids who love playing in the immense garden she made me build. I still write her letters that she receives and reads but never answers. I should have held her back but I couldn’t build the courage to do so. She gave me so much that I refused to take her freedom from her. My father disowned me so I had to sell a few things to make sure I could provide for my family. I had to build a name for me and create a new set of connections to make sure I could make the best lifestyle for the kids. She doesn’t tell me where she goes only the kids know because she tells them her adventures. I wrote about her occasionally and how I wish I hadn’t married her for our parents demands. I sent her the kids along with my book. I secured it knowing our kids are curious and have a passion for books like their mothers. I worked on the field seeing has it needed some cleaning and it helped me cope with the separation. 6 years of our time has been spent separated. I didn’t argue with her. I simply wanted what she felt was best for her.
Ella’s POV
I watch my children all sleeping. They are as peaceful and unproblematic as their father. I didn’t realize how long I’d been away. 6 years of my life. I realize through his writing how broken I’d left him yet he wouldn’t tell me. He praised me for being the woman that I am. Free spirit, he named it. I hold the book to my heart. At first I was angry at all I needed to go through and my father was never pleased with me so I wanted to hurt him for having me. But it was never my intention to hurt Anton. I love this man more than I care to admit. My father did apologize but I wasn’t ready to go home. The kids needed stability while I needed to breathe. I cried everyday wishing my mother and grandmother could be there to see them grow up. I understood now the pain of parenting without your own. I decided to cut my trip short. I was supposed to give a speech but I didn’t care. My treasure was my husband, he first granted me the freedom I searched through all those books I’d read. I brought the kids to my father’s so that he could spend time with them before going back home. Anton ran out the house before I could get to him. He reached me and looked overwhelmed. I grabbed his face to kiss his broken heart. It felt bitter so sour to kiss him knowing I was the reason he cried so much. But he didn’t end it there. He kissed me until we couldn’t breathe and I couldn’t think anymore of anything else. I forcefully pulled us apart to breathe. “Where are our kids?” He asked. “At their grandfather’s”. He happily took me and my belongings home.
